Here’s How Wind Can Damage Your Home’s Roof

The wind blowing on the roof of your home isn’t something to be worried about, especially if it’s built by trusted professionals such as the local roofers at Empire Contractors LLC. However, there are extreme weather events that make wind a force so strong that it can severely damage most modern roofing systems.  To understand how wind can damage your home’s roof, here’s what you need to know:

Direct and Indirect Damage

Wind damage can be broken down into direct and indirect types. Direct damage occurs in conditions where roofing materials have been blown off or have been damaged or displaced. Meanwhile, indirect damage is sustained from objects that are blown by the wind and are referred to as "missiles". These can include roof-covering materials such as tiles, shingles and other material that have been pulled loose by the wind and blown onto roofing systems of neighboring homes. Gravel, tree limbs, or any debris can become missiles once they’re carried off by the wind.

How Wind Creates Damage

Even if a modern roof is designed by the best contractor in residential roofing services to resist the typical wind loads in their area, no roof is likely to withstand the likes of a tornado or a hurricane. In between breezes and twisters is a whole range of wind speeds that incrementally damage the roofing system. As wind moves over a roof, its effect is not uniform. It usually isn't a problem until it starts to move materials, such as the shingles and membrane. Certain parts of your roof will be subject to higher pressures, such as along its perimeter.  Depending on the way the wind blows, the shape of the roof and the location on the roof, there will be negative pressure (suction) or positive pressure (pushing). If any part of your roof is even a little bit loose, the wind can get below it and push it up and leave the underside exposed, allowing rain to leak through the roof.
